Scilla, Calabria, Southern Italy
Between Scylla and Charybdis - This stunning coastal town is Scilla, located in Calabria, southern Italy, on the shores of the Tyrrhenian Sea. Perched on the rocky promontory is the medieval Castello Ruffo, overlooking the legendary Strait of Messina, which separates the mainland from Sicily (seen in the distance).
According to Greek mythology, Odysseus had to sail through this narrow strait, caught between two deadly dangers: the monstrous Scylla on one side and the whirlpool Charybdis on the other. Today, there are no threats, only breathtaking views and whispers of ancient legends.
Scilla by night a hidden gem on the Calabrian coast. The warm glow of the lights reflecting on the water, narrow streets climbing the hills, and the ancient Castello Ruffo, standing guard over the town since at least the 5th century BC. Pure Mediterranean magic captured from above by DJI Mini 4 Pro. Named after Scylla, the sea monster of Greek mythology, this place once inspired tales of peril and wonder in the Strait of Messina. With the fortress perched above the cliffs and the sea shimmering below, it’s easy to feel that the legend still lingers in the air. The site of Castello Ruffo has been fortified since ancient times — first by the Phoenicians, then the Greeks, and later by the Romans. Centuries of myth and history, layered in stone.
